Dr. B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar serves as the President of NGM College, Pollachi (Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College), guiding one of Tamil Nadu’s most respected autonomous institutions with decades of experience spanning education, industry, and public service. Born in 1944 into an aristocratic family in Samathur, Pollachi Taluk, Coimbatore District, Dr. Vanavarayar qualified as a Barrister before entering the world of business — a journey profoundly shaped by the high ideals of Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. As a tribute to this influence, he was responsible for erecting a life-size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in his hometown of Pollachi.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
Dr. Vanavarayar has dedicated much of his life to the field of education, consistently advocating for the integration of strong values into academic curricula. He has served on the Management Committees of numerous leading schools and colleges across the region, working to ensure that ethical and value-based learning remains central to institutional growth. In recognition of his contributions to education, he was nominated to the Syndicate of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, a position he served with distinction. He currently serves as the President of NGM College, Pollachi, guiding the institution toward continued academic excellence.
Leadership in the Textile Industry
As a prominent figure connected with the textile industry, Dr. Vanavarayar was chosen to lead the industry’s representative association at both the regional and national levels. Through his initiative, the Government of India sanctioned over $150 million toward the Cotton Technology Mission, a landmark contribution to the modernization of India’s textile sector. As Chairman of the Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation, New Delhi, he played an instrumental role in preparing the industry’s Vision Statement, which was released by the then Union Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram.
Cultural and Interfaith Leadership
Beyond his business and academic pursuits, Dr. Vanavarayar has been deeply committed to promoting India’s cultural heritage and fostering peace and harmony among diverse religious and cultural communities. As Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, he continues to preserve and propagate India’s ancient wisdom and philosophical traditions. As Chairman of Divyodaya, an organization founded to encourage inter-religious dialogue, he has worked extensively to safeguard India’s unique pluralistic culture.
A prominent leader within the Rotary Movement, Dr. Vanavarayar has spent decades working toward universal peace and brotherhood. In recognition of his global perspective and secular credentials, he was invited by Pope John Paul II to attend the Day of Prayer for Peace in the World, held at the Vatican in January 2002 — a rare honor reflecting his standing as an interfaith and cultural leader on the world stage.

- Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) from Sri Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore, in 1999, in appreciation of his social work rooted in Gandhian ideals
