On the 12th of July, 2026 NGM will enter into the seventieth year of its glorious existence. What a journey it was – amazing, 70 years ago the founders felt the need for Higher Education at Pollachi when the need for education was not fully felt. It was indeed a daring venture and the formative years had been very challenging.
NGM was primarily a dream of the great visionary Sri Nallamuthu Gounder and was made real by Arutchelvar Sri. N. Mahalingam avl.
NGM was founded in 1957, on this day only a decade after freedom that came in 1947. The first generation leaders of the independent India thought education has to be the uppermost priority for a just born Republic as that alone can bring about a transformation among the people to enable them to contribute their might towards the gigantic task of Nation Building.
Among the few universities started by the Britisher the Madras University happened to be one. Again, Sri Kamaraj, the then Chief Minister, along with C. Subramaniam, who was in his Cabinet, persuaded the prominent men all over the State to take up education as their obligation to the society. It was at that time many schools and colleges sprang up and NGM was one such initiative.
Today, in 7 decades NGM has grown in stature and has got A++ rating in NAAC. Almost 70,000 students have gone out of the institution and had been greatly responsible for the transformation of the Pollachi region, providing livelihood to many.
Let us recall with a sense of gratitude to all those who have toiled to make NGM a landmark in the field of Higher Education.
May we resolve on this happy occasion to rededicate ourselves to the cause of education and make NGM an Institution of National Excellence.
