Born on March 21, 1923, to Sri P. Nachimuthu Gounder and Smt. Rukmani Ammal, Dr. Mahalingam rose from humble agricultural roots to become one of South India’s most celebrated industrialists, educationalists, and philanthropists.
From Agricultural Roots to Industrial Leadership
Dr. N. Mahalingam’s family origins trace back to agriculture, but through his father’s hard work and entrepreneurial drive, the family’s ventures expanded into established business enterprises. Dr. Mahalingam went on to transform this family business into a mighty modern enterprise — the Sakthi Group, a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning sugar, finance, automobiles, transportation, and more. Life presented him with numerous opportunities and challenges, and he consistently displayed an extraordinary ability to convert those opportunities into lasting achievements, ultimately gaining prominence as an industrialist, political and social activist, educationalist, and philanthropist.
Despite his many remarkable accomplishments, Dr. Mahalingam remained, at heart, a man of deep spiritual conviction, with keen spiritual motivations underlying all his activities. He was profoundly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Rajaji, and lived the life of a true Gandhian throughout his career. He is also credited with several scholarly publications on religion, philosophy, ancient civilizations, and literature.
A Legacy in Public Service and Politics
Dr. N. Mahalingam served in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu for fifteen years and later served as Chairman Emeritus of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission. He was an eminent Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow, and a devout worshiper of Jothi and follower of Saint Ramalinga Vallalar, reflecting the deep spiritual dimension that guided his public and personal life.
Champion of Social Reform and Nation-Building
Dr. Mahalingam stood at the forefront of numerous social reforms throughout his life. As an industrialist of unparalleled talent, he carried a strong sense of responsibility toward both government and society. He was responsible for and instrumental in the implementation of the Parambikulam–Aliyar Irrigation Project, a landmark development for the region’s agriculture. He was also involved in establishing the Institute of Asian Studies in Madras in 1981, furthering scholarly research into the region’s history and culture.
His commitment to society at large is reflected in the generous and sustained support he extended to numerous educational, medical, religious, and charitable institutions. In recognition of his philanthropic contributions, His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peedam honored him with the title “Aram Valarkkum Annal” in 1983, and later conferred upon him the title “Muthamiz Seva Rathinam” in 2003. He also served as Honorary Consul for the Government of Mauritius from 1989 to 1990.
Founding Vision Behind NGM College
Dr. N. Mahalingam’s association with NGM College, Pollachi, dates back to the institution’s founding in 1957, where his able guidance and patronage enabled the college to launch degree courses in Economics, Mathematics, and Physics in 1959, growing it from a Pre-University institution into a full-fledged center for undergraduate and postgraduate education. His continued benevolent patronage was instrumental in the college later achieving UGC autonomy in 1987, and his legacy is honored today through the Dr. Mahalingam Centre for Research and Development (MCRD) on campus. As Patron, he embodied the vision that quality higher education should be accessible to students from agricultural backgrounds in Pollachi and Udumalpet, empowering them to compete on a global stage.
