NGM COLLEGE AT A GLANCE – MILESTONES (1957 – TILL DATE)

The following timeline details the progressive evolution of Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College (NGMC), from its inception to its current standing as a top-ranked institution (95th Rank in NIRF-2023).

🏛️ The Founding Years (1950s – 1960s)

  • 1957: The College was inaugurated on 12th July as “Nallamuthu Gounder Municipal College” with 160 students.

  • 1959: Introduction of B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Mathematics, and B.Sc. Physics following a major donation from Dr. N. Mahalingam.

  • 1960: The Science Block was officially opened.

  • 1965 – 1968: Expansion into B.Sc. Chemistry (1965) and B.Com. (1968).

📈 Academic Expansion & Modernization (1970s – 1980s)

  • 1971 – 1972: Introduced B.A. English Literature, B.A. History, and B.Sc. Botany.

  • 1974: Construction of the UGC block.

  • 1975: Introduction of Co-education.

  • 1976: Implementation of the Semester System.

  • 1979 – 1982: Introduction of Post Graduate courses (M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Physics, M.Com.) and the B.Sc. Zoology program.

  • 1984: Celebration of Silver Jubilee festivities.

  • 1986: Launched B.Sc. Computer Science.

  • 1987: A landmark year with the introduction of the Autonomous System and the Ethics & Culture Course.

💻 The Digital & Vocational Shift (1990s – 2005)

  • 1990: Introduction of Master of Computer Applications (MCA).

  • 1994: Vocationalization of B.Sc. Physics, B.A. Economics, and B.Com..

  • 1996 – 2000: Rapid growth in Self-Financing (SF) courses: B.B.M., B.Sc. Computer Science, B.C.A., and B.Com. C.A..

  • 2001 – 2004: Launch of M.A. English, M.I.B., M.A. Tamil, and the P.G.D.B.A. program.

  • 2004: Implementation of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to enhance curriculum flexibility.

🏅 Quality Assurance & Infrastructure (2006 – 2015)

  • 2006 – 2007: Introduction of the Human Excellence Course and receipt of NAAC ‘A’ Grade (I Cycle).

  • 2008 – 2010: Expansion into B.Sc. IT, MSW, M.Sc. Computer Science, and the Meritorious Service Award from the Rotary Club.

  • 2011 – 2012: Added specialized streams: B.Sc. CT, B.Com. Professional Accounting, and B.Com. Banking and Insurance.

  • 2013: Re-accredited with NAAC ‘A’ Grade (II Cycle) and inauguration of the UGC-funded Indoor Stadium.

  • 2014 – 2015: Launch of B.Com. Business Process Services, M.Sc. Chemistry, and M.Sc. Botany.

🚀 The Modern Era (2016 – Present)

  • 2016 – 2017: Rollout of diverse Diploma/Certificate courses (Tally, Hindi, DTP) and the B.Com. International Business degree.

  • 2022: Alignment with futuristic learning via B.Sc. CS with Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI&ML) and B.Sc. CS with Data Analytics (DA).

  • 2022: Continued focus on values with the Gandhian Thoughts certificate course.
