The Visionary Behind NGM College’s Founding
Shri S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder is remembered as the Founder of NGM College, Pollachi (Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College), the primary benefactor whose generous donation of land and funds gave birth to the institution on July 12, 1957. Fondly honored today as “Amarar” (the Immortal), his name lives on as the first half of the college’s identity — Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College — a lasting tribute to his founding vision and contribution to education in the Pollachi region.
Founding NGM College Through the Pollachi Kalvi Kazhagam
NGM College was born through the collective vision of the Pollachi Kalvi Kazhagam, a collaborative educational trust established in 1957. Shri S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder served as its President, working alongside fellow visionaries including Thiru V.K. Palanisamy Gounder (Vice-President), Thiru M.S. Palaniappa Mudaliar (Treasurer), and Thiru N. Mahalingam (Secretary), with the support of Thiru C. Subramaniam, the former Union Finance Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee.
As Chief Donor, Shri Nallamuthu Gounder was instrumental in inaugurating the College on 12th July 1957, which began functioning with a strength of 160 students in the Pre-University Course. His founding ideal — that “private wealth must be invested for public good” — remains the guiding philosophy of the institution to this day, ensuring that quality education stays accessible to first-generation learners and rural, underprivileged students.
A Vision Rooted in Rural Empowerment
Shri Nallamuthu Gounder envisioned an institution that would provide quality higher education to students from agricultural backgrounds in and around Pollachi and Udumalpet, empowering them to compete on a global stage. As the First President of the College, he laid the foundation for its core identity of discipline and close “parent-child connectivity” between faculty and students — values that continue to define the NGM College experience for generations of students.
A Legacy Honored Through the Decades
Shri S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder’s centenary was celebrated with great splendor on 27th January 1998, with an inaugural address delivered and a Centenary Souvenir released by the College Patron, Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalingam. In further tribute to his founding contribution, a statue of Founder Amarar S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder was unveiled on campus on 20th July 2009, in the presence of the College Patron and President.
An Enduring Foundation for Generations to Come
As Founder of NGM College, Pollachi, Shri S.P. Nallamuthu Gounder’s legacy continues to shape the institution’s growth from a modest Pre-University center in 1957 into a UGC-autonomous, NAAC-accredited postgraduate teaching and research institution offering a wide range of programs today. His founding vision of accessible, values-driven education for rural communities remains at the heart of NGM College’s mission, honored in the very name the institution carries forward.
